Professor Sten Lindahl, MD, PhD, FRCA graduated from the Medical School at the University of Lund, Sweden 1972, and became a Board-certified Pediatrician and Anesthesiologist/intensivist 1981 and is the inspiration for the Lindahl Lecture at the Napa Pain Conference.  He completed his PhD thesis at the University of Lund 1977.

From 1986 to 1988, Dr. Lindahl was a Consultant for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota . He returned to Lund as Pediatric anesthesiologist/intensivist in 1989. Appointed Professor in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Karolinska Insitutet, Stockholm, Sweden 1990 and from 1990 to 2001 also clinical chair Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Karolinska Hospital. From 1993 to 2000 in addition, academic chair, Department of Surgical Sciences, Karolinska Institutet.

Dr. Lindahl was a member of the Nobel Assembly for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1996-2012. Vice-chair, 1999-2000 and chair 2001-2002 of the Nobel Committee. During 2008 vice-chair and 2009 chair of the Nobel Assembly.

He is currently professor emeritus at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology with active research in the field of oxygen biology. Started a leadership position at the University Hospital – Hamad Medical Corporation – in Qatar March 1, 2012, with the role of developing a modern Academic Health Care System and to develop current medical research activities in Qatar.

The Lindahl Lecture was founded in 2013 in honor of Dr. Sten Lindahl, Chair Emeritus of the Nobel Committee in Physiology or Medicine, Professor Emeritus at Karolinska Institutet, and is the kindest, most amazing man you’ll ever meet.

The Napa Pain Conference Lindahl Lecture honors scientific pioneers modeling the traits of curiosity, vision and good humor.

In keeping with our mission, admission to the Lindahl Lectures are free to all students and researchers with interests in the sciences, innovation and clinical advancement.
